The Kindness of Strangers: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
