Around 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then discovered many other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for details.
A senior official stated the incident made him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
