A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
